The 1 in 5 Short Film Short Project was a partnership between Rozelle Neighbourhood Centre & Torrid Films to collaborate with emerging artists with disability in order to produce a professionally made short film.
The project auditioned a principal ensemble of emerging actors with disability who collaborated in development workshops over a 6 week period, resulting in a short film script based on the ensemble’s ideas and stories. Supporting and extra roles were filled by professional actors via audition and casting sessions.
The short film, directed by Zoe Harvey of Torrid Films was shot in early December 2012 with the support of a professional crew. Post production took place over the ensuing months.
The film had an initial screening at Hoyts Cinema Paris Fox Studios in May 2013, and has subsequently been entered into national and international film festivals.
The initial screening was hosted by arts and film journalist Fenella Kernabone and well received by the 200 audience members who included representatives from Screen Australia, the mainstream arts community, people with disability, families and disability organisations.
FACHSIA screened excerpts of 1 in 5 as part of a series of presentations about the National Disability Strategy at public sector executive leadership conferences in 2013.
The 1 in 5 project was supported by Leichhardt Council to produce a DVD of the film. Captioning and audio description was sponsored Red Bee Media.
